Ask Me Anything with Mike Duckstein
I’m Mike Duckstein, Network Infrastructure Analyst at Sun Server Hosting, and I’m opening up a space where you can ask me anything about the world of networking. Whether it’s IPv4, IPv6, routing, VPS, or dedicated servers – no question is too simple or too technical.
This column is here to clear doubts, share insights, and help you understand the backbone of the internet in plain language.

Question:
Do websites and apps actually log your IPv6 address, or is it mostly just IPv4?
-Name : Roman Kazymyrovych Kozlov
-From : Kyiv Ukraine
Answer:
Depends on how you connect. Sites don’t log by default — they need to be set up for it. Most of the time you’re on IPv4 anyway, since a lot of ISPs don’t even have IPv6 working. IPv6 was meant to fix address shortages, but NAT already solved that, so… yeah. – Mike

Question:
How do I set my own IPv4?
-Name : Jaylen Blackwell
-From : NY, USA
Answer:
If you mean your device’s IP on your local network, go into network settings, switch from DHCP to manual, and enter the IP you want (steps vary by OS). Or set it on your router/DHCP server. If you mean your public IP, that’s assigned by your ISP – you usually can’t pick it, unless you pay them for a static one. – Mike
